Written by Jenna Posey The Service Enriched Education (S.E.E.) program begins this fall at McMurry, and many of you might be wondering why the university has chosen to add more activities to your workload.
While community service might not be a college experience that many of us associate with college, it’s something that goes along with everything we stand on here at McMurry.
“Service to something bigger than ourselves is explicitly stated in our core values,” said McMurry President, Dr. John Russell. “The S.E.E. Program provides us with a greater chance to succeed in our mission statement of preparing students for a fulfilling life of leadership and service.”
Dr. Russell, along with other program organizers, feel that this emphasis on service distinguishes the McMurry experience from other colleges.
“Students choose to come to McMurry because they want something special and something different,” Dr. Russell added.
While we all want to uphold what our university stands for, some of us might still be concerned about how extra work will affect our already busy schedules. Read more by clicking below...
Sean White, an incoming freshman from Spring, TX, thinks that we should have no worries.
“I think it’s pretty cool,” White said. “I don’t think the school would make anything get in the way of our academics.”
If you aren’t familiar with the S.E.E. Program, there is a page on the McMurry homepage that explains the program in depth, but here are the basics of what you need to know about the program:
* The program is only required for incoming freshmen and transfer students. The program is optional to upper classmen who want to get involved and who might want to be a positive roll model. * The required number of hours completed before graduation is 288 hours. While that seems like a lot, it really isn’t. That averages out to two hours per week throughout four years. * The program will be working with organizations that we have already been helping for years, such as Big Brothers Big Sisters, along with programs that are new to us.
The S.E.E. program is not only a way to serve our university, but it’s also a real way to experience they joy of helping others.
